Occupy-Wall-Street

By now you have heard of Occupy Wall Street. (If you haven’t here is the official website – OccupyWallSt.org). What began as a handful of protestors camping out in Zuccotti Park (near Wall St), New York City, has quickly turned into a global phenomenon. There has been 1,500 cities involved and tens of thousands of people marching, as of today the 15th of October 2011 – the “International Day of Action”. You may be wondering, what are they protesting about? Some say that they don’t know what they’re protesting about, but it has become clear enough that it is about many things such as: inequality — both socially and economically, corporatocracy, the corruption of the government, the Federal Reserve and silent wars for corporate greed.

Last week here in Fairfield, IA, USA there was an Occupy Fairfield event which was filmed by Wade Koch and friends. Check out the video below!

I thought there were some really nice points made by these local protestors in this video, such as:

“Humanity becoming more humanitarian and that’s not something that can be enforced by law but it is the raising of consciousness to a new paradigm.”

“It’s not about convincing people because people who want to exploit and destroy the world will fall with those systems. It’s not our role to try and forcibly change those people but it is our obligation to spread awareness of what’s going on.”

“It really takes courage to redefine what wealth is for yourself and to confront materialism that we’ve become addicted to. To say, ‘no I don’t need the flat screen TV, no I don’t need the new iPad toy.’”

“There are so many places that are ‘away.’ We through trash ‘away’, when we go to the bathroom it goes ‘away’, when you use the sink it goes ‘away’ and ‘away’ is nowhere – it’s our planet.”

Today, Occupy Wall Street definitely went GLOBAL – see these photos below!

It is amazing for me to see the power of social media in amongst all of this. It is because of the Internet and the social networks like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter that so much positive change can happen in such a short amount of time. For example, if you search “Occupy Wall Street” in YouTube you will see more than 23,000 results mostly from individuals uploading footage from their phones and little camcorders. Similarly, on Twitter almost every second someone is referencing “Occupy Wall Street” via the hashtag #OWS.

If you ask me, we are living in very exciting times with the rise of “awareness” and the power coming to the us, the 99%, to stand up for ourselves and demand transparency, equality and unity in our world. We as individuals have the power to change ourselves as individuals and to know ourselves more fully making our world beautiful – a gift that can be given to all future generations. I truly believe this quote from Margaret Mead that says, “A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.

So, tell your friends and family to spread the message of peace and Occupy your Main Streets everywhere. Using social media will also make a difference because now every “share” counts.
