Why social networking? The big picture.
People think of Facebook and Twitter today and automatically a certain picture is painted. Whether you think of a teenager throwing up status updates like "I just finished watching Twilight' or using twitter to spam and get as many followers as possible, the fact is sites like these can be very powerful tools when used properly.
Business people, entrepreneurs and even corporations are using these sites more and more. Last year Pepsi opted out of participating in Super Bowl commercials to launch an expected $20 million social media campaign.
Facebook and youtube are numbers 2 and 3 of the most trafficked sites in the world right behind Google. - Alexa.com
Facebook gets an estimated 130 million visitors in the US alone. 65% of these people make more than $60,000 per year. - quantcast.com
What can I tell you right now that will separate you from the millions of folks using these sites?
1) Find your value, your passion and what you are most knowledgeable about.
2) Create your brand around this niche.
3) Offer this in a consistent manner without being overly promotional.
4) Use your blog as your central hub to create an engine-effect.
Be specific, do some planning and commit to offering what you are most knowledgeable about. This allows you to deliver value from a space that is sincere and heartfelt. This naturally attracts enthusiastic people. These folks are much more likely to create a live community and provide solid feedback, and genuinely request services.
With the proper tools, time and online attention you can quickly establish yourself as a leader in your niche. Because you have chosen to teach what you enjoy the more feedback and attention you receive is energy invested right back in to learning and teaching more. To be able to invest all your time in the area you love, I believe is one of the greatest gifts one can attain. This is what separates the masters from the masses.
Be consistent on the social networks without bombarding your friends, fans and followers and being too pushy. You may have heard the saying "the more you give the more you receive." It is recommended to provide 8 pieces of knowledge and /or inspiration to 1 request.
If the social networks are rivers, your blog/website is the ocean. You should have a prominent link to your website from all of your networks and make your profiles clearly visible from your homepage. This serves as a gateway to and from and all the networks and provides a home to unify your work on the social networks, as well as houses, and provides flexibility for your call-to-action.
Done properly this system will allow you to learn, teach, expose and even monetize your passion.
Filmmaker David Lynch says, "everyday should be like a puppy dog wagging his tail." With today's tools we can live this!
